Personally, we find that Belgium is created as a marriage of convenience between different nations. A marriage without love but with many advantages, seen politically in the 1830's. Because Belgium was and still situated between the former rivalling states of France against the UK and Germany, it's an perfect country to be at a strategical place.
The french-speaking elite have always dominated the political structure of Belgium until the '70s with several State Reformations afterwards. In the past this side has had a strong economical background of steel-processing industry. But now the economical gravity-center belongs to the Flemish (dutch)-speaking side with the petro-chemical industry, textile and diamonds
Brussels is a 'communal son' of these two communities. The German-speaking side, you can consider as a 'daughter' of these two. In times of equality, each 'member of the family' has its own independence, but financially (tax wise), educationally (justice) and medically (health insurance) they are connected with each other.
Like the time spirit of today, most marriages are not quite happy and the law is making divorces very easily. According to an exit-poll (flemish-dutch), published in the "Standaard" on April 18. 2007, a marriage is very happy when there are no children(s) involved with. Once they have children(s), the joy of happiness is 'weaken a little bit' (by stress of combining work and family), but still it is enjoyable. If there was/is a divorce going on, mostly the father (Walloon) will be more happy than the mother (Flanders) with these children(s), because a single mother can difficultly manage both these children(s)...
