People are asking us, as an European Chinese (from Hong Kong), what we are thinking about the OGB 2008?
As of many hard-working Chinese, living in Belgium, we should say that we're proud of what the mainland China has realised so far, although many negative critics (about human rights or hard censorship for example) are circulating the media.
But as realists, we should also say that "China will be a superpower (again)" according to the dreams of the Chinese president Hu Jintao. Reading of course: "Will be important (again)"
It is already a military superpower on ground, but not in the air nor the marine. Economically it is also on the right way with each year impressive growth-percentages, but with slightly recessive tendencies because of the inflation. Socially the living-standards are increasing, but not in every layer of the society, only in th e big industrializing cities. On the agricultural layer, there will be forever a certain material poverty: they still can feed themselves. We only are fearing for a possible internal civil war "thanks to" the social differences.
And why not compare the actual situation with the Olympic Games in 1936, Germany, Berlin? A big, exaggerating spectacle with perfect arranging choreographics and broad avenues specially created for the Olympic teams, without disturbing the normal audiences.
Times are changing in a positive way hopefully. As long as there are bread (or rice), games and money, everybody is happy in the material way!
